Summary

This position is part of the Survey Research Operations (SRO) Design, Methodology, and Statistical Support (DMSS) unit at the University of Michigan?s Institute for Social Research, Survey Research Center. DMSS is responsible for sample design, paradata monitoring, weighting and imputation, and data analysis for a wide range of surveys. The unit also houses a program of methodological research to improve the cost-effectiveness and quality of survey estimates and offers internal statistical support to other SRO units.

The Statistician Senior will be responsible for independently carrying out paradata analysis and monitoring, complex database queries, development of dashboards and reports, and the implementation of sample designs, weighting and imputation on SRO sponsored projects. Other responsibilities may include the development of sample frames and providing direction regarding procurement and analysis of external data sources.

Responsibilities*

  • Independently perform complex database queries and develop reports on data collection processes; create tailored project reporting using complex paradata; develop dashboards to facilitate monitoring of sample performance.

  • Implement statistical analysis plans tailored to specific project needs.

  • Independently perform cleaning and documentation of production or primary data generated from SRO studies; provide complex paradata exploration and analysis for internal and external clients.

  • Write programs to clean data and perform statistical analyses in R, SAS, Stata, and/or Python, including the handling of large/complex data sets; program recodes and derived variables necessary for quality control and monitoring of production.

  • Formulate data visualizations and documentation of analytic results for research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences and workshops.

  • Support SRO Sampling Operations in the design and implementation of sample designs on sponsored projects; develop plans, oversee implementation and development of documentation for post-survey processing steps including weighting, imputation of missing data, non-response and other post-survey adjustment.

  • Procure external data sources needed to create survey samples or supplement analyses (e.g., publicly available data from the census or other sources); provide analysis of external data sources to inform design decisions.

  • Implementation of methodological and analytic tasks related to maps, geocoding, spatial analyses, and demographic data.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in statistics, data science, survey methodology, biostatistics, geospatial data sciences, environmental informatics, or quantitative social science.

  • 3-5 years of experience in data analysis.

  • Demonstrated data management skills and experience preparing data for analysis, including handling of large/complex data sets.

  • Demonstrated advanced statistical proficiency.

  • Demonstrated competency using R.

  • Demonstrated competency with at least one other statistical software package, such SAS, Python, or Stata.

  • Possession of excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in some aspect of survey research, research design, data collection, sampling, or coding.

  • Demonstrated experience with geographic information system (GIS) or geocoding.

  • Demonstrated skills in any of the following areas: statistical process control, reporting or dashboard development, composing technical documentation, relational database technologies, or production support.

  • Familiarity with data management or report programming tools such as Tableau, SAS BI, and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).

  • Demonstrated experience in statistical sample design, sample implementation, and/or post-survey data processing.

Work Locations

This position requires being on-site at the University of Michigan offices in Ann Arbor. If the project tasks assigned, job performance, and SRC policy allow, the option for a hybrid schedule including limited off-site work may be available after an initial period of orientation.
