Naval Facilities Engineering Command BOILER PLANT EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in Belle Chasse, Louisiana

Summary This is a public notice flyer to notify interested applicants of anticipated vacancies. Applications will not be accepted through this flyer. Responsibilities You will install, maintain and repair a variety of complex equipment and systems involving power boilers with complicated components, critical requirements, and rigid tolerances. You will repair and maintain single and multiple fuel power boilers, pollution control equipment, water treatment systems, chemical dispensers, electrostatic precipitators, bag houses, ash removal equipment and wet particulate scrubbers. You will monitor and test the operation of power boiler systems to identify malfunctions and potential problems with equipment. You will perform preventative and scheduled maintenance on plant systems and equipment. You will service units by cleaning or replacing filters, strainers, orifices, ignition devices, and other items on power boilers. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.The Screen-out Element for this position is: THE ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A BOILER PLANT EQUIPMENT MECHANIC WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION INCLUDING: 1) Installing , modifying, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing industrial or domestic boiler plant systems and equipment; 2) Planning, laying out and installing boiler plant systems and equipment from blueprints, sketches, etc.; 3) Working with processing lines that may contain hazardous materials; and 4) Following all safety requirements, practices, and procedures when working in a hazardous or industrial environment as well as on all work assignments. This announcement uses the Certain Competitive Service Positions direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. Several vacancies may be filled. A forty hour work week is typical of this position. This position is at the full performance level. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible selectees. PHYSICAL EFFORT: May work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work may require frequent standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, or climbing. May occasionally work from scaffolds and platforms and may perform strenuous work while standing, sitting, or lying. May frequently lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally items weighing more with assistance of material lifting devices or other workers. WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is usually performed indoors on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to dust, dirt, hazardous chemicals, high-temperature surfaces, high ambient temperatures, direct steam, excessive noise, rotating machinery, asbestos insulation, confined spaces, high voltage, hazardous fumes, high pressure air, steam, or fluids. May occasionally service equipment outdoors under adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to the potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions follows prescribed safety practices and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety eye and ear protection, reflective vests, aprons, face shield, coveralls, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hardhats, and fire retardant gloves.
