Financial Aid Counselor

The Financial Aid Counselor provide excellent customer service and guidance to financial aid applicants and their families throughout the financial aid application process; determines eligibility within the parameters of institutional, state, and federal requirements.

Candidates will be invited to demonstrate a willingness to support the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Provides advising throughout the financial aid process to prospective, new, and current students and their families. Must be willing to continuously develop and grow knowledge of available types of financial aid, scholarship, and general student eligibility criteria.

  • Exercises independent judgment in the management of operational details of the financial aid process including but not limited to:

  • Reviews incoming financial aid application and any supporting documentation needed to determine the accuracy of the financial and household information reported on the FAFSA.

  • Complete assigned duties with a high degree of accuracy to ensure compliance while experiencing multiple interruptions.

  • Exercise great attention to detail when completing assignments as error in judgment or calculations could result in unintended consequences for the student and/or the institution such as under or over funding of a student, loss of student eligibility, audit findings, fines, damage to school’s reputation or loss of institutional eligibility.

  • Has the authority to recalculate and makes changes to financial aid awards when student’s eligibility changes.

  • Oversees the administration of external federal and state programmatic and community partner funding used to support degree attainment for specified student populations. Will work in tandem with grant managers, faculty, and other staff to ensure funding is managed in accordance with contract parameters.

  • Monitors TEACH grant eligibility for undergraduate Education students; checks GPA after each semester, ensure required documents are complete, send TEACH exit information, etc.

  • Other duties as assigned. This may include supporting other department staff; assisting with financial aid events; studying and interpreting federal regulations; participating in state and regional financial aid organizations, etc. 

    Desired Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience include:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, or another related field

  • Required: A minimum of 4 years of financial aid or other related experience

  • Upholds and supports the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary

  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities.

  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Financial Affairs and throughout the university, in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ.

    Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Attentiveness to detail

  • Ability to organize workflow in a self-directed manner

  • Exceptional interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to present a professional image in all telephone and personal contacts

  • Expertise with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access; EdConnect; Jenzabar; and PowerFAIDS
