Burleigh County Weed Control Officer in BISMARCK, North Dakota

**About the Role: Under the supervision of the Burleigh County Weed Board, this position is responsible for the enforcement of applicable regulations under the North Dakota Century Code (NDCC) 4.1-47 Noxious Weed Control. The Burleigh County Weed Control Officer may enter upon any land within the jurisdiction of the officer to perform duties and to exercise powers under NDCC sections 4.1-47-01 through 4.1-47-30, including taking specimens of weeds or other materials, without the consent of the landowner or other person responsible for the land and without being subject to any action for trespass or damages, provided reasonable care is exercised.

**This position administers the Weed Control program; spraying is done via third party contractors.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Requires High School Diploma or a GED, and six (6) months to one (1) year of herbicide application experience.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a commercial applicators certification form the North Dakota State University, Pesticide Division. Upon hire, must obtain and maintain Commercial Applicators License in the following categories: CORE, Agricultural Pest Control, Right-of-Way, and Ornamental Turf.
  • Must possess and retain at the employees expense, a Class D drivers license as issued by the Drivers License Division of the State of North Dakota, and a clean driving record.
  • Working knowledge of pesticide application, federal and state weed control laws, identification of noxious weeds, and application formulas and distribution.
  • Required skills include word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet, and other general computer usage skills, familiarity with GPS data recorders and mapping software.
  • Preferred Candidate must be highly organized with the ability to work with minimum supervision.

Primary Job Duties:

Work with township officials in identifying areas of need within appropriate areas and notify where and when spraying will need to be done.

Survey and plot noxious weeds and biological control areas (insectaries) and after determining needs, arranges for distribution.

Maintain a sufficient supply of weed control related personal protective equipment, maintenance supplies, and office supplies and order as needed.

Receive calls and information regarding noxious weed issues in the county, work with farmers, homeowners, and other members of the public to address needs, answer questions, and investigate complaints and reports to county officials.

Issue notices to landowners if necessary.

Prepares and applies for weed control related grants through state and other sources. Direct and assist spray contractor to control noxious weeds.

Ensures other sprayers keep accurate and detailed records for each spraying, checks records for accuracy and completeness.

Maintains Material Safety Data Sheets on all pesticides for Weed Control and its storage facility and provides training to staff at least annually.

Ensures proper storage of chemicals and inspects storage areas at least monthly and control and maintain inventory.
