Vet Assistant - Rooms

Welcome to our sunny little beach town of Carpinteria! VCA Carpinteria Veterinary Hospital has been serving this community and its pets for over 40 years and we are seeking an experienced Vet Assistant to join our team.

We’re looking for a personable yet highly professional “service extraordinaire” to join us in delivering our mission to our clients and their pets.

This is a very unique position that is critical to facilitating the flow of our pets and clients safely in and out of our hospital. We are looking for an individual who performs well under stress, gets along and can work with all types of personalities, organized, confident, cannot have any major fear of animals, self starter, and extremely punctual.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Previous experience or training/education working in a veterinary facility preferred but not required.

  • Must be friendly, outgoing, "people oriented".

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Telephone and computer skills are necessary.

  • Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments and to accept challenge.

Primary job responsibilities:

  • Maintaining medical records.

  • Obtain and record patient histories

  • go through previous records and enter proper vaccine/treatment history

  • dispense collect specimens and set up for laboratory pick up

  • prepare ear cytology for Veterinarian or Technician to view under microscope go over medications with clients – advise clients of what vaccines and treatments pets are due for

  • safely moving contagious/stressed/aggressive pets in and out of the examination rooms without incident

  • preparing euthanasia paperwork with clients

  • safely obtaining weight and temperature readings for each patient

  • clean and maintain all areas in the room department throughout the day

  • stock inventory and keep shelves organized

  • communicating with clients in regards to the pets needs and facilitating the room flow for all pets coming into and out of the hospital

Physical Requirements:

  • Dependable attendance is required.

  • Any allergies to animals must be controlled through medication.

  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

  • Must be willing to work long or irregular hours under pressure conditions.

  • This position requires the ability to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly during 8-hour day.

  • Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment such as electric clippers, syringes, radiology equipment, laboratory equipment, and computers.

This position pays $18.00 - $25.00, dependent on experience, education, and certification.
