SUNY Cortland Assistant Director of Student Conduct in Cortland, New York

Position Summary:

The Student Conduct Office is responsible for developing and administering a Code of Student Conduct that supports the College’s values, goals, and priorities. The program strives to create an environment that fosters personal integrity and promotes the educational mission of the college, equality, and diversity on campus.

The assistant director of Student Conduct is primarily focused on the education of students through conduct policies and procedures, and assists in the overall administration of the student conduct process by addressing alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct that happen within the residence halls. Working closely with Residence Life and Housing staff members, the assistant director will investigate, charge, adjudicate and support the students who have allegedly violated the Code of Student Conduct. The assistant director will also facilitate outreach, programming, and trainings to prevent and address student behavior and trends. They will also be responsible for training residence hall staff in the conduct process.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Direct the adjudication and case resolution process involving conduct cases occurring in on-campus residence halls.

  • Conduct student Incident Review Meetings and determine appropriate educational sanctions for residence life and housing cases.

  • Act as the Student Conduct Advisor in the formal hearing process for conduct cases that occurred in on-campus residence halls.

  • Assign student conduct cases to appropriate individuals based on the nature of the incident and conduct history of the alleged individuals.

  • Supervise residence hall directors and area coordinators in the processing of and information gathering for student conduct cases.

  • Conduct the periodic review of conduct cases, including reviewing recordings of appropriate student conduct-based meetings conducted by residence hall professional staff in order to provide feedback and points of development for the residence life and housing staff.

  • Collaborate with appropriate members of the residence life and housing central office team to evaluate the ongoing conduct work of the residence hall professional staff.

  • Develop and deliver, in conjunction with the director of Student Conduct, student conduct trainings for residence life staff. This includes area coordinators, residence hall directors, and resident assistants.

  • Maintain a current and accurate understanding of Federal, State, and Local Laws including NY Article 129B, Title IX, Clery, VAWA , FERPA , and associated mandates.

  • Serve on departmental, divisional, and campus-wide committees as assigned.

  • Utilize the Student Conduct software, Maxient for processing student conduct referrals, advising area coordinators and residence hall directors, and coordinating workflow within the student conduct office.

  • Develop and deliver educational and preventative presentations to the campus community, including in residence halls and welcome week programs.

  • Communicate with campus colleagues on student disciplinary matters as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree

  • A minimum of two years of experience in a higher education setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Maxient

  • Experience adjudicating student conduct cases.

  • Experience developing and presenting educational programs, presentations and/or workshops.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work in highly complex and difficult student situations

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills

  • Demonstrated organizational and coordination skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality

  • Knowledge of student development theory

  • Experience using or evidence of knowledge and understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

  • Experience using or evidence of knowledge and understanding of Title IX, VAWA and NY Article 129b

  • Experience using or evidence of knowledge and understanding of the Clery Act.
