Position Summary

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Oversee activities for multiple pre-college programs that include but not limited to:
    • Contacting high schools to provide application materials to eligible students;
    • Recruiting faculty, graduate students or supplemental staff performing research in CANR and allied programs to serve as mentors to student apprentices;
    • Establishing criteria and appointing a committee to select participants;
    • Arranging housing and food service;
    • Matching student participants with mentors;
    • Planning tours, demonstrations and educational, social and cultural activities;
    • Designing and administering pre- and post-program evaluation surveys;
    • Supervising undergraduate student program assistants, and meeting regularly with summer diversity program staff;
    • Assisting with the recruitment and matriculation of prospective students into CANR majors;
    • Other activities as required by the program.
  2. Develop and implement a comprehensive access and inclusion recruitment initiative for expansion of underrepresented populations in CANR that involves:
  • Maintaining and expanding the current summer pre-college program;
  • Collaborating with departments that have established pre-college programs such as but not limited to the Food Science Institute, the Plant Science Discovery Institute, and the Vetward Bound program;
  • Coordinating outreach visits to high schools for promotion of undergraduate diversity efforts;
  • Collaborating with the CANR Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as academic advisors across the college to promote diversity and cultural sensitivity within CANR departments and units;
  • Developing specific support programs to enhance the academic development of students, particularly in their first year of study;
  • Providing one-on-one consultation, guidance, referral and advocacy to underrepresented students enrolled in the CANR;
  • Advise, guide, assist and support the Michigan State University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Chapter of Minorities in Agriculture and Natural Resources Association (MANRRS) to enhance the groups academic, professional and leadership development as a factor of increasing the diversity of undergraduate students throughout CANR and across the University
  1. Serve as the link between the Office of Academic and Student Affairs and CANR departments and units who wish to establish diversity programming via increased recruitment of underrepresented populations.

  2. Provide academic consultation to students, prospective students, and alumni regarding college requirements as well as activities of professional development.

  3. Represent CANR by researching and meeting with incoming students and parents who are designated as underrepresented across the university infrastructure and attend meetings, conferences and discussions pertaining to increasing and enhancing the student experience for underrepresented populations.

  4. Provide CANR retention support by way of participation in student enrichment programs, teaching or assisting with career advising seminars and courses for which underrepresented populations are involved.

  5. Compile, analyze and report on the performance of pre-college diversity initiatives within OASA specifically:

  • Maintain a database of all students that participated in pre-college programming;
  • Request recruitment and retention data from the Office of Admissions on CANR undergraduate under-represented population enrollment status.
