S&P Global Product & Research Specialist – Freight and Commodity Flows in Houston, Texas

The Team :

This role is part of the Shipping Analytics division within Fuels, Chemicals and Resource Solutions in S&P Global Commodity Insights, working as a Product & Research Specialist to support the sales motion in Americas. The role reports to the Research Lead, and maintains close coordination communication with key colleagues in the Research org and with the Product Management Lead & other shipping PMs.

Responsibilities and Impact:

Demonstrate and discuss FCRS Freight and Commodity Flows (FCF) product offerings to sophisticated potential end-users at prospect companies.

  • Draws on deep industry and product knowledge in commodities and shipping industry.

  • Understanding of persona workflows and needs, derived from past work experience in trading/sales roles in target industry.

  • Detailed product knowledge gained from experience as a member of the commodities/shipping research/content team that produces the products.

  • Crafts demonstrations to the current market conditions (that day/week) – so as to illustrate how the questions on the minds of the users that day/week can be answered through use of the products.

  • Conducts demos both virtually and in-person – extensive travel may be required to client locations if the clients desire in-person meetings.

Business development for FCRS FCF products

  • Generate awareness of our FCF products and be able to engage with a broad range of client industries including refining and midstream, logistics, engineering, trading, and financial and other support services.

  • Ability to build and nourish relationships with key industry contacts across a broad spectrum that utilize or could benefit from products and provide key inputs to support sales objectives and key initiatives.

  • Collaborate with Research and Product management to create and maintain a prioritized target list of clients for the FCR products, including both existing CI customers and new logos.

  • Engage in targeted, proactive outreach to target clients to talk about our products and their capabilities – leveraging contacts provided by FCRS research and through new contacts acquired from conference attendance, etc.

  • Strategically time/prioritize clients for outreach based on when CI Sales will be receptive to selling that client a FCF product (i.e. only when the client is going to renew another CI product)

Monitor and support renewals

  • Monitor/maintain awareness of usage trends in the book of business and identify clients whose renewals seem at risk due to low product engagement.

  • Maintain awareness of the FCF BoB’s renewal cycle, and collaborate with Commercial Manager and Specialists to support the proactive engagement with accounts that are scheduled to renew

  • Provide written recommendation/guidance to the Commercial Manager in advance of every major renewal.

  • Summarize usage information and explain what it tells us about how much the client values the product.

  • Support client adoption curve management by helping to identify additional training needs for new and existing clients and supporting delivery of appropriate training as needed.

  • Propose products to add on, and how to position them to the client.

Help to drive Commercial Manager awareness/appreciation for the products

  • Work in parallel with commercial sales to drive growth (in subscription) and strengthen retention at major strategic accounts.

  • Circulate case studies of major new sales that illustrate best practices in product positioning alongside other CI products, and how to utilize the specialist for maximum impact.

  • Provide higher-level presentations/demos and case study discussions in various Commercial Manager meetings.

Compensation/Benefits Information: (This section is only applicable to US candidates)

S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $85,700 to $170,400. Final base salary for this role will be based on the individual’s geographic location, as well as experience level, skill set, training, licenses and certifications.

In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan. This role is not eligible for additional compensation such as an annual incentive bonus or sales commission plan.

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Required Qualifications :

  • At least 3-5+ years total experience in commodity research and/or trading.

  • Experience in physical and paper trading is an advantage.

  • Strong organizational, time management and people management skills to effectively work across different time zones.

  • Excellent professional communication and presentation skills and the ability to establish and maintain strong professional relationships.

  • Highly skilled in Excel and PowerPoint.
