SALT LAKE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Coordinator 2, Student Success Advocate in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

Under general supervision, the Student Success Advocate will assist the Orientation and Student Success Office in coordinating a comprehensive strategy for supporting a cohort of over 300 first-gen, underrepresented students to graduate from Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). Critical responsibilities for this position include, delivering relevant services and resources designed to meet the basic needs and college success goals of our student body; coordinating early alert interventions, including a robust summer bridge program for first-year exploring students and STEM majors; leveraging technology (i.e., early alert and case management tools, communication platforms, and analytic dashboards) to identify, track and document challenges students are facing in their academic journey and collaborate with others to mitigate these challenges; and connect students with opportunities to engage in deep learning and college-completion initiatives.

As a member of the OSS team, the Student Success Advocate will benefit from being part of a caring team environment made up of more than 40 people, which includes professional staff and student leaders. OSS anticipates hiring a hardworking and energetic professional to help expand our team and continue to provide high-touch support for SLCC students.

Deliver Relevant Student Services and Resources:

- - Provide individualized support to students who may be experiencing difficulty adjusting to the culture and norms of higher education or those facing barriers impacting their success and completion. - Advocate on behalf of students who are experiencing hardship at SLCC and find ways to connect them to opportunities designed to enhance their academic experience or work with others to create opportunities for these students and change institutional orthodoxies. - Employ listening and advising practices to assist students in accessing College resources and support their completion goals. - Assist students in identifying resources for major and career selection and ensure students are following through with referrals. - Support students with applications and appeals, mentoring, involvement opportunities, stress management, internships, time management, research opportunities, scholarships, participation in high impact practices and other college processes. - Work with students one-on-one to establish goals and to drive connection with relevant resources. - Assist in workshops and other academic recovery programming.

 

Coordinate Early-Alert Interventions:

  • Utilize student retention, student development, and learning theories to shape student interactions.
  • Work collaboratively with departments in the Student Success Unit, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs to case manage 150 to 300 students per year.
  • Utilize MySuccess and work together with other departments to create meaningful student success interventions.
  • Meet regularly with other departments to discuss student success interventions, and challenges that impact student retention and persistence.
  • Work collaboratively with others to implement a summer bridge program and ongoing support services for new students starting at SLCC.
  • Develop practices and procedures for following up with students and maintaining engagemen t.
  • Work with the OSS assistant director to assess the effectiveness of services and create appropriate recommendations for improvement.

Leverage Technology:

  • Document student interactions in MySuccess (i.e., SLCC's case management software).
  • Create and upload student success plans to MySuccess, and monitor students' progress through these plans.
  • Track raised flags, referrals and success plans using MySuccess and work with other departments to ensure students are being seen properly.
  • Upload student information to third-party software (i.e., dashboards and communication tool ) and ensure the integrity of the data being used.

Connect Students to Opportunity:

  • Develop a working knowledge of SLCC academic advising, financial aid, and career services and procedures.
  • Catalog and identify all student success initiatives at SLCC, and as appropriate connect students to these services proactively and when it is relevant to do so.
  • Connect students with the Basic Needs Coordinator who assist students to access community resources and agencies designed to meet basic human needs.
  • Train and supervise student interns to assist with case management load.
  • Develop resources and marketing materials to assist students in exploring opportunities to enhance their academic experience.
  • Other duties as assigned.
